Understanding Alcohol Addiction

When Drinking Becomes Something Else

Alcohol use disorder doesn’t start with a crisis. It starts with one drink becoming the only way to get through the day. It starts with needing more to feel the same relief. It starts with the people around you noticing before you do.

If you’re reading this page, something shifted. Maybe you’ve tried cutting back and couldn’t. Maybe a doctor mentioned your liver enzymes. Maybe your partner said something that landed differently this time.

Alcohol addiction frequently occurs alongside anxiety, depression, and trauma. Drinking becomes the solution to problems it eventually makes worse. This cycle isn’t a character flaw. It has a clinical name, a well-understood neuroscience, and effective treatments.

You don’t need to be at rock bottom. You need to be at a point where you’re willing to try something different.

Our Approach

How Trailhead Treats Alcohol Addiction

Trailhead’s approach to alcohol use disorder treatment combines evidence-based clinical care with holistic programming. Your treatment plan starts with an ASAM assessment that determines the right level of care based on your clinical needs, not a one-size-fits-all track.

Clinical Foundation

Individual therapy and group therapy form the core of every program level. Your individual therapist stays with you throughout treatment. The person you open up to on day one is the same person tracking your progress months later.

trauma-focused therapy is available for clients whose drinking is tied to unresolved trauma. Co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, and PTSD are treated within the same program by the same team, not referred out to a separate provider.

Trailhead holds dual licensure from the State of New Hampshire for both substance use disorder and mental health treatment. Co-occurring disorders treatment is built into every care plan.

Holistic Programming

Clinical work addresses the patterns that drive addiction. Holistic therapies build the daily skills that sustain recovery. Trailhead integrates yoga, breathwork, meditation, Reiki, and grounding techniques into the treatment schedule alongside group and individual sessions.

These aren’t add-ons. They’re scheduled into your day because self-regulation, stress management, and body awareness matter as much in year five of recovery as they do in week one.

Clinical Director Alysia LaGambina, LICSW leads the clinical team with a therapeutic foundation in adult mental health and addiction treatment and a holistic, trauma-informed approach to care.

MAT Section

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Alcohol Addiction

Vivitrol is a monthly injectable medication that reduces alcohol cravings by blocking opioid receptors in the brain. Unlike daily oral medications, Vivitrol is administered once per month at our Salem, NH facility, removing the daily compliance burden.

At Trailhead, medication-assisted treatment with Vivitrol can be:

  • ✓ Combined with PHP for clients in the most structured program level
  • ✓ Combined with IOP for clients balancing treatment with daily responsibilities
  • ✓ Combined with individual therapy for clients in outpatient care
  • ✓ Standalone for clients who need the medication without enrolling in a full program

Your care team monitors your response to Vivitrol and adjusts your treatment plan accordingly. MAT is not a replacement for therapy. It’s a clinical tool that gives your brain the space to engage in the therapeutic work.

Not sure if Vivitrol is right for your situation? Call 978-915-8317 and our admissions team can walk through your options. The call is confidential and pressure-free.

Programs Section

Program Levels for Alcohol Treatment

Your clinical assessment determines which program fits your situation. Most new clients begin with partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient and step down as they progress.

🏥

PHP

PHP is the most structured level. Five hours minimum of clinical programming per day, five days per week, with lunch provided. This is where most clients start when alcohol has been disrupting multiple areas of their life.

📚

IOP

IOP maintains therapeutic structure while allowing more time for work, school, or family responsibilities. Sessions run mornings, five days per week.

💬

Outpatient

Outpatient is the least intensive level and is often used for step-down care or for clients who need ongoing individual therapy and medication management.

A women-only track is available within both PHP and IOP, the first of its kind in New Hampshire outpatient treatment. This track addresses women-specific issues including trauma, codependency, and empowerment in a dedicated therapeutic setting.

Not sure which program is right? Your ASAM assessment answers that question. Call 978-915-8317.

Recovery-Owned Section

Why Trailhead Exists

Trailhead Treatment Center was founded by Caitlin DiBlasi (Co-Founder, COO, BS, RN, CARC) and Mike DiBlasi (Co-Founder). They built Trailhead around what they wished existed when they were looking for help: a facility that felt human, not institutional.

That perspective shapes everything from the admissions process to the physical space. Warm colors, natural lighting, plants throughout. A dedicated quiet space for yoga, meditation, and breathwork. Lunch served during PHP. A clinical team that prefers recovery experience in their hiring.

This isn’t a detail buried in the “About” section. It’s the operating principle behind every decision.

Trailhead is located at 103 Stiles Rd, Salem, NH, with convenient I-93 corridor access. The facility serves clients from Salem, Windham, Plaistow, Londonderry, Derry, Atkinson, Hampstead, and Pelham in New Hampshire, and Haverhill, Methuen, Lowell, Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover in Massachusetts.
