Key Facts
Understanding Trauma and PTSD

How Trauma Affects Recovery

Most people who come to Trailhead carry trauma. It shows up as hypervigilance, emotional numbness, sleep disruption, substance use, or a feeling of being stuck that talk therapy alone hasn’t resolved. Trauma does not always look like a single catastrophic event. It can accumulate over years of difficult relationships, childhood instability, loss, or environments that felt unsafe.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops when the nervous system stays locked in a threat response long after the original danger has passed. Flashbacks, avoidance behaviors, difficulty trusting others, and emotional reactivity are common signs. Left untreated, PTSD intensifies over time and drives patterns that look like separate problems: anxiety, depression, substance use, difficulty maintaining employment or relationships.

Trailhead’s clinical approach treats trauma as the root, not just the symptoms it produces. Your individual therapist works with you to identify how trauma has shaped your responses and builds a treatment plan that addresses the source.

If you’ve been through treatment before and the underlying trauma was never addressed, that previous experience still counts. It gives your care team data about what needs to shift this time.

Treatment Approach

How Trailhead Treats Trauma and PTSD

Trauma-Focused Therapy

Trailhead’s trauma treatment approach integrates trauma-informed care across all programming with evidence-based and holistic modalities. Rather than a single protocol, your care team draws from a range of tools — CBT, DBT, individual therapy with trauma-specialized clinicians, and holistic therapies including yoga, breathwork, grounding techniques, sound therapy, reiki, and meditation — to build a plan around your specific trauma history and readiness.

Clinical Director Alysia LaGambina, LICSW leads the team with a holistic, trauma-informed perspective that recognizes the connection between mental health, environment, and lived experience. Trauma-informed principles shape every group, every session, and every clinical interaction at the facility.

Your therapist paces treatment according to your stabilization progress and window of tolerance. Trauma processing is not a first-session intervention. Your care team builds toward deeper clinical work as part of a structured, individualized plan.

Individual Therapy

Every client at Trailhead is assigned an individual therapist who stays with them for the duration of treatment. Your therapist designs sessions around your specific trauma history, not a generic curriculum. The person you meet on day one is the person who knows your full story.

Individual therapy sessions address trauma processing, self-regulation skills, coping strategies, and the connection between trauma and any co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, or substance use.

Holistic and Movement-Based Therapies

Trauma lives in the body, not just the mind. Trailhead integrates movement-based and holistic therapies into daily programming:

  • ✓ Yoga for nervous system regulation and body awareness
  • ✓ Reiki for energy-based stress relief
  • ✓ Sound therapy for grounding and sensory regulation
  • ✓ Breathwork for activating the parasympathetic nervous system
  • ✓ Meditation for present-moment awareness and emotional regulation
  • ✓ Grounding techniques for managing flashbacks and dissociation
  • ✓ Nature-based activities using outdoor spaces for therapeutic exposure to natural environments

These therapies are not add-ons. They are built into the daily treatment schedule alongside clinical sessions, group therapy, and case management.

Self-Regulation Focus

Trauma disrupts the body’s ability to regulate emotions, stress, and physical responses. Trailhead’s programming focuses on teaching self-regulation skills that clients take with them after treatment ends. This includes identifying trauma triggers, managing emotional reactivity, and building tolerance for distress without reverting to avoidance or substance use.

Trauma-Informed Approach

Trauma-Informed Care Throughout All Programming

Trailhead does not run a separate “trauma track.” Trauma-informed principles are woven through every group, every session, and every interaction at the facility. Staff are trained to recognize trauma responses and adjust care accordingly.

This means the environment itself is part of treatment. Warm colors, natural lighting, plant life, and outdoor spaces create a setting that feels safe rather than clinical. Group therapy sessions are structured to prevent re-traumatization. Individual therapy is paced according to each person’s window of tolerance.

Co-Occurring Treatment

Trauma and Substance Use: Treated Together

Trauma and substance use are deeply connected. Research from SAMHSA estimates that up to 75% of people in substance use treatment report trauma exposure. Many people use substances to manage trauma symptoms they don’t have another way to cope with: intrusive memories, sleep disruption, hypervigilance, emotional numbness.

Trailhead treats co-occurring disorders in one integrated program. Your care team addresses trauma, substance use, and mental health conditions simultaneously rather than requiring you to complete one before starting another. This approach reduces the risk of relapse driven by unprocessed trauma.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is available for clients with opioid or alcohol use disorders alongside trauma. Injectable options include Vivitrol, Sublocade, and Brixadi. MAT can be combined with IOP, individual therapy, or provided as a standalone service.

Not sure which combination of services fits your situation? Call 978-915-8317 and our admissions team will walk you through the options based on your clinical assessment.

No. Trailhead treats the full spectrum of trauma, not just clinically diagnosed PTSD. Many people experience trauma symptoms like anxiety, emotional dysregulation, sleep disruption, and avoidance without meeting formal PTSD diagnostic criteria. Your clinical assessment determines the right treatment approach for your situation.
Yes. Trailhead treats trauma, substance use, and mental health conditions simultaneously in one integrated program. Research supports this approach because unprocessed trauma is a primary driver of relapse. Separating trauma treatment from substance use treatment forces clients to address symptoms without addressing the root cause.
Treatment length varies by individual. PHP and IOP programs are measured in weeks to months. Your care team adjusts the plan as you progress rather than locking you into a fixed timeline. Factors that influence duration include trauma complexity, co-occurring conditions, and your response to trauma-focused therapy and other therapies.
Many of Trailhead’s clients have prior treatment experience. If previous treatment did not address the underlying trauma, that is information your care team uses to build a more effective plan. Previous treatment is not a failure. It is data. Your therapist reviews your history and focuses on what needs to shift.
Most major insurance plans cover outpatient trauma and PTSD treatment. Trailhead’s admissions team verifies your specific benefits during your first call and explains what is covered. Check your coverage online.
Trailhead treats single-incident trauma, complex trauma, childhood trauma, relational trauma, and trauma that co-occurs with substance use or mental health conditions. The clinical team designs treatment around your specific experience rather than applying a one-size-fits-all protocol.
Trailhead integrates yoga, reiki, sound therapy, breathwork, meditation, grounding techniques, and nature-based activities into trauma treatment programming. These therapies support nervous system regulation and complement clinical modalities like trauma-focused therapy and individual therapy.
Yes. Trailhead offers a women-only track within both PHP and IOP that focuses on trauma, codependency, and empowerment. It is the first women-only outpatient treatment track in New Hampshire.
